5 Indicators Of Rulers Robbing The Future Generation

Regimes rob the past, present and future of a nation.

Actions and decisions of today's leaders wield significant influence over the prosperity and well-being of future generations. Unfortunately, pursuit of short-term gains and selfish interests by current leaders lead to devastating consequences that plunge the next generation into a cycle of poverty due to unending debts. 

Greedy rulers, driven by personal myopic agendas and narrow interests, often prioritize immediate benefits over sustainable policies. Their decisions, characterized by corruption, mismanagement, and lack of foresight, have profound implications for the socio-economic landscape of tomorrow.

In Uganda the regime consumed all the past achievements, devour all the present taxes/state coffers and have insatiably resorted to robbing the future generation. Ugandans are at a level that gave up on their economic achievements done/built by the past regimes as everyone knows they have been shamelessly robed by the current regime. (Uganda transport company (UTC) Uganda Airlines, industries, hotels, housing estates, public land to mention a few of the properties left by the previous regimes that have been impudently stolen). Presently, robbing state coffers has become a common occurrence approved by the executive down words—Ugandans seem to have given up on this also left with an alternative to struggle to save the future generation from being robbed by the blatant thieves in advance. 

Unfortunately as shown from the indicators of a regime eating into the future discussed below, the merciless regime is already plundering the generation 50years to come through dubitant means which include:

Debt Accumulation: Greedy leader’s abuse power entrusted into them and engage in reckless spending, borrowing extensively accumulating substantial debts without considering their implications. This excessive borrowing (Without a tangible investment) becomes a burden for future generations in repayments with interest which constrains their ability to invest in crucial sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure. The debt cycle entraps subsequent generations in a web of financial strain and limited opportunities. 

Formalizing regime exploitation by rubber stamping loans has become the current parliament’s only visible duty.

A regime that eats into the next generation has a characteristic of folding social Structures and Safety Nets that would have checked its performance into own hands. As they focus on immediate gains myopic rulers neglect crucial social safety nets. Funds that should be allocated to public welfare programs, support systems, and poverty alleviation initiatives are siphoned off or mismanaged. This erosion of essential societal structures amplifies the vulnerabilities of future generations, exposing them to recurrent poverty and diminishing their chances of upward mobility.

Environmental Exploitation and Resource Depletion: Perhaps the best indication to show greedy rulers belief that the world starts and ends with them. Avaricious autocrat’s carelessly destroy the environmental and greedily dilapidate natural resources leading to degradation of the environmental and depletion of natural resources that future generations would depend on. The ramifications of environmental damage, climate change, and resource depletion will disproportionately burden those who come after us, impeding their ability to thrive in a deteriorating world. Since 1986 Uganda has lost 82% of the forest cover from 682ha to 311ha an average change of 1.18% per annum. Wetlands, lakes rivers and other natural resources intentionally dilapidated with the ruler setting up authorities assigned duty to destroy them!! (NEMA, NFA). 

Gen Amin discovered oil in 1978, but reserved it for future generation, Museveni has solely exploited it as a personal asset. Minerals like Gold, copper etc were discovered by white colonialists and reserved for future use but the rate at which all those resources are being exploited as private personal assets is alarming to the future generation. 

Education and Opportunities: Manipulative rulers always see education as their major enemy and always work for its downfall, eraser or total dilution to see it valueless. Such leaders are seen banning particular subjects (psychology, political science history and arts) altering the curriculum to fit their interest but destroy the future.  They severely impact educational systems by making it too expensive for the common man, by diverting funds meant for education and manipulating educational institutions for personal gain. Makerere University is the best example here. This deprives future generations of quality education, limiting their opportunities for growth, innovation, and economic empowerment. They create a cycle that hinders progress and deepens societal divide between the haves and not.

Greed-driven regimes tend to make and work on policies that often exacerbate social (Family, ethnic and tribal) aggression due to inequalities. The concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a few widens the gap between the rich and the poor. This disparity not only stifles social mobility but also increases tensions within society. Future generations inherit not just financial debts but also the burden of addressing societal ethnic—tribal hostilities created by past leadership's egotistical decisions. South Africa post-apartheid best exemplifies this.

The actions and decisions of present leaders significantly shape the future prospects of subsequent generations. It's imperative to hold leaders accountable, demand ethical governance, and actively participate in shaping a future where the mistakes of greed-driven leadership are rectified, and a more sustainable and equitable society is established for the benefit of generations to come. To break the cycle of robbing the future, it's crucial to embrace responsible and forward-thinking leadership that prioritizes the long-term well-being of society over short-term gains.
